Glass Mobile

Purpose: Gift
Processes: Stained glass cutting, Soldering
A birthday gift for my girlfriend inspired by Alexander Calder’s mobiles.
I learned that Calder’s mobiles were hardly preplanned and the overall form developed organically. So I ordered a bunch of glass and cut out some fun shapes.
Here are all of the shapes that I had cut and sanded laid out
On the left was the initial form that I envisioned. As each piece is wrapped, glued, and soldered to others, the center of mass of the system shifts in a way that is dificult to predict. Placing the next peice is entirely determined by the ever shifting center of mass, which is why Calder never planned his pieces., and the final form is nothing like my original idea.
